Weight Management Program Shows Promise for Long Covid Sufferers
Weight Management Program Shows Promise for Long Covid Sufferers
A recent study led by the University of Glasgow has unveiled encouraging findings regarding the management of Long Covid symptoms in individuals who are also overweight. The ReDIRECT trial, published in Nature Medicine, indicates that a structured weight management program, supported by dietitians and peers, may significantly improve the quality of life for those grappling with the lingering effects of COVID-19.
The trial involved participants suffering from Long Covid symptoms lasting over 12 weeks. Each participant identified the symptom they most wished to improve, such as fatigue, breathlessness, or pain. Over six months, they engaged in a digitally-focused weight management program that included a total diet replacement for the first 12 weeks, followed by gradual food reintroduction and ongoing support for weight maintenance.
The results were striking. Approximately 60% of participants reported a reduction in fatigue levels, while cognitive assessments revealed a 25% improvement in attention and memory tasks. Additionally, tests of respiratory function showed enhanced lung capacity and endurance among those who adhered to the program. On average, participants lost about 10% of their body weight, a significant achievement that contributed to their overall well-being.
Dr. David Blane, a key researcher in the study, noted, “While it is difficult to assess the clinical significance of the health improvements in our study participants, there are promising signals that supported weight management could be a helpful part of a rehabilitation approach for some people living with Long Covid.” He emphasized the importance of involving the Long Covid community in shaping the research, ensuring that the program met the needs of those affected by this debilitating condition.
Professor Emilie Combet, an expert in human nutrition, highlighted the complexity of Long Covid and the intervention itself. “ReDIRECT was a complex intervention, involving not only remotely-delivered weight management but also dietitian and peer support. Further research is needed, as Long Covid remains a significant public health concern affecting millions worldwide,” she stated.
Jane Ormerod from Long Covid Scotland expressed gratitude for the inclusive approach taken in the study. “Representatives from Long Covid Scotland were involved from the outset to ensure that the voices and experiences of people with Long Covid contributed to the development of this research intervention,” she said.
As the world continues to grapple with the aftermath of the pandemic, this research offers a glimmer of hope for those living with Long Covid, suggesting that a tailored weight management program may provide a pathway to relief and recovery. Further studies will be essential to validate these findings and explore the long-term benefits of such interventions.
