Clyde in the Classroom Merks 25 Year o Inspirin Young Ecologists
The Clyde in the Classroom project is celebratin a remairkable milestane—25 year o fosterin a luve for ecology amang bairns in the West o Scotland. This innovative initiative has transformed 2,000 classrooms intae vibrant fish hatcheries, inspirin ower 50,000 young minds tae appreciate the importance o local biodiversity.
Launched in 2001 by the Clyde River Foundation at the University o Glesga, the project aims tae cultivate future stewards o the River Clyde. It immerses pupils in haunds-on lairnin aboot the ecology an wildlife o their local environment. The program emphasises sustainability, addressin pollution an ither threits tae precious freshwatter ecosystems.
The success o Clyde in the Classroom is evident in the paths taen by its former pupils. Monie hae pursued studies in zoology, returnin tae the University o Glesga tae deepen their unnerstandin o the natural warld. This fu-circle moment brings joy tae the project team, wha witness the impact o their efforts firsthaund.
Initially involvin juist five schuils, the project has grown exponentially. Theday, it raxes aroond 100 schuils an engages 3,000 bairns ilka year. A key component includes the introduction o broon troot egg hatcheries in classrooms, whaur students lairn tae maintain watter quality an care for the fish as they hatch an grow. Efter weeks o nurturin, the young fish are released intae local rivers, merkin a significant moment for baith students an the environment.
