More than 12 organizations dedicated to aiding victims of crime are set to benefit from a significant funding boost of over £1.1 million, sourced from penalties imposed on offenders. This initiative, part of the Victim Surcharge Fund (VSF), aims to provide essential support to those affected by crime, including child victims, survivors of sexual assault, and individuals facing domestic abuse.

Since its inception in 2019, the VSF has already assisted over 5,000 victims, and this latest round of funding promises to extend that reach even further. Offenders who incur court fines are subject to an additional penalty known as the victim surcharge, which is then allocated to the VSF. To date, the fund has distributed a total of £2,446,787 to various victim support organizations.

Victims Minister Siobhian Brown emphasized the profound impact crime can have on individuals, stating, “It can cause financial hardship, damage to property, and ongoing trauma. It is absolutely right that offenders should pay to support victims to recover.” She highlighted the Scottish Government’s commitment, noting that £93 million has been invested in victim support over the past five years.

Among the organizations receiving funding are Victim Support Scotland, which will receive £850,000, and Women’s Aid South Lanarkshire and East Renfrewshire, which will receive £31,800. Other recipients include Migrant Help, Dunbarton District Women’s Aid, and the Moira Fund, among others. Each organization will utilize the funds to provide critical services such as emergency housing, clothing, and emotional support.

Kate Wallace, Chief Executive of Victim Support Scotland, remarked on the importance of this funding, stating, “This funding will be instrumental in expanding access to our Emergency Assistance Fund to as many people impacted by crime as possible.” The Emergency Assistance Fund has already provided urgent financial aid for necessities like housing and groceries.

Dot Horne, Director of 6VT Edinburgh City Youth Café, expressed gratitude for the funding, which will allow them to swiftly address the needs of young victims. “This funding will allow us to respond quickly to the immediate, practical needs of children and young people affected by crime,” she said.

With this latest allocation, the Victim Surcharge Fund continues to play a vital role in supporting those who have suffered due to criminal acts, ensuring that help is available for healing and recovery.
