Communities to Shape Future of Renewable Energy Benefits in Scotland

The Scottish Government is calling for community input on how to enhance benefits from renewable energy developments. This initiative seeks to ensure that local groups receive meaningful advantages from projects that harness clean energy.

Community benefits, which are currently voluntary, can take various forms. They may include financial contributions to local initiatives, in-kind support for community projects, or site-specific advantages like reduced energy bills or affordable housing. Over the past year, more than £30 million has been awarded in community benefits across Scotland, a notable increase from £25 million in 2023. With anticipated investments in clean energy reaching £40 billion over the next decade, the potential for local communities to gain further benefits is significant.

Acting Energy Secretary Gillian Martin emphasized the importance of involving communities in the transition to renewable energy. “Scotland is set to become a global renewables powerhouse,” she stated. “It is vital that communities share in the economic and social benefits created as we develop our renewable energy resources.” Martin encouraged all interested parties to participate in the consultation, aiming to ensure that community benefit schemes deliver lasting impacts and support local growth.

Scottish Renewables Chief Executive Claire Mack echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for sustainable benefits as the clean energy transition accelerates. “Delivering our pipeline of projects will provide a significant boost for the economy through high-value jobs and supply chain growth,” she noted. Mack expressed a commitment to ensuring that community benefits continue to support local needs.

Zoë Holliday from the Scottish Community Coalition on Energy praised the Scottish Government’s efforts to update the Good Practice Principles for community benefits. She urged for ambitious improvements to reflect current technologies and contexts, ensuring a fair deal for communities during the energy transition.
