New Drive to Empower Scottish Renters

In a bid to bolster awareness of tenants’ rights, Housing Minister Paul McLennan has unveiled a fresh campaign. This initiative aims to inform renters about their entitlements and where they can seek help and advice. Scotland boasts some of the strongest tenant rights in the UK, including the ability to challenge rent hikes and the assurance of proper notice before any increase. Tenants are shielded from unlawful evictions and have the right to a well-kept home.

During his visit to Citizens Advice Scotland in Edinburgh, Mr. McLennan stressed the importance of this campaign. He remarked, “People who rent their homes in Scotland already have strong rights when it comes to rent rises, maintenance and repairs and evictions. This campaign is important to make sure we increase awareness of these rights.” He further highlighted the conclusion of the temporary rent adjudication change on March 31, which was part of the transition back to market rent after the Cost of Living Act’s temporary rent cap. Mr. McLennan urged tenants worried about rent increases to seek a review and mentioned ongoing efforts in the Housing Bill to enhance long-term rent control and tenant rights.

Aoife Derry from Citizens Advice Scotland echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for a rented sector that serves everyone. “A safe, secure home is foundational to people’s lives,” she said. The Scottish CAB network stands ready to offer free, confidential advice to those in need, ensuring that both tenants and landlords are supported.

This campaign arrives as part of the Scottish Government’s response to the cost of living crisis, with the Cost of Living (Tenant Protection) (Scotland) Act 2022 offering temporary relief. As these measures evolve, the focus remains on creating a fair and informed rental market for all. Scotland seeks a rented sector where rights and duties are clear, ensuring more people can remain in their homes.
